Appearance: Beyond has made himself look like L. Dark eyes, his naturally black hair spiked, makeup, pale skin, a deep slouch and baggy jeans. When not done up this way, B stands erect and his hair falls straight and loose to his jawline. His eyes are a deep crimson color when he is not wearing contact lenses and they glow when he consciously observes a person’s name.
Personality: Beyond is exceptionally intelligent and very fond of word games and puzzles. His crimes even take on aspects of both. However, his sharp mind is skewed from schizophrenia. He rants often, sounding like a piece of classical literature when he does, and he has disorganized patterns of thought so his rants are often hard to follow. His hallucinations are minimal but his perception of reality is glazed over. In his mind there is himself and L, then everybody else. He acts without considering consequence and imagining long-term goals in actual reality does not come easily to him. He wants only to know L and to surpass him on his own terms. Socially, Beyond is incredibly handicapped. He will speak to others and even demonstrate affected politeness but he lacks the capacity to form long lasting and meaningful friendships.
Abilities/Strengths: Beyond’s intelligence and mind for puzzles are often employed as his major strengths. He was also born with the eyes of a Shinigami and seems to be planetouched by the Shinigami world. Beyond knows the lifespans of everybody in the world, even the people he has not met yet. The only lifespans he does not know are his own and that of the world itself. Information on human lives is a constant feed, making his eyes red at all times. He also knows names, but not faces and needs to see a face to confirm the name and the lifespan. Speed is another one of his qualities, and he is easily able to dodge attacks. Since he is mad, he can take more damage than most people without falling.
Weapons: His mind. He is also skilled with small edged weapons, specifically knives, and usually carries at least two around with him, one for killing and the other for skinning.
Weaknesses: His schizophrenia makes him extremely difficult to trust. He is also only human and fatal attacks will kill him. He is vulnerable to everything a normal human would be vulnerable to. And since his world revolves around L, manipulating him through L is not entirely difficult.

History: Beyond Birthday was born in northern England, but speaks seldom of his past. His inflection indicates that it was not a childhood of storybook quality. When he was still young, his father was murdered and his mother died shortly after in a car accident leaving him without any caretakers. He was found by Wammy House and taken in with a given alias of “B” and was called The Second Child. The deaths of his parents did not seem to phase him.
Growing up, “B” was for “Backup”. He was the second in line to succeed L after A. He and A became very close, bonding over a mutual fascination for the man they were each destined to “become”, though neither had ever met him. All they had were descriptions of the man. Imagination soon filled in where there was no fact and to each of them “L” became nearly synonymous with “god”. A eventually cracked under the pressure of succeeding the master detective and killed himself. Beyond’s already frail grasp on reality started to slip even further upon the death of his friend. He possessed no desire to become L. He wanted only to surpass L on his own grounds and as long as L was still alive, Beyond would never be anything other than a copy. Driven by an urge to put his own mark upon the world, Beyond ran away from Winchester and went to L.A. where he dressed himself up according to the descriptions of L. He styled his hair, adopted a deep slouch, and put make-up on around his eyes. Whatever he knew of L, he would be greater. His slouch was exaggerated, his eyes unnaturally dark when he wore the contact lenses. His addiction to sweets reached the point where he turned coffee into sludge by adding so much sugar.
If L were a genius, Beyond would be twice the genius. If L were a deviant, Beyond would be twice the deviant. He looked at himself in the mirror and practiced his laughing, trying to disguise his Shinigami cackle with something more human sounding. And he took up a knife. And he started killing.
He would never become L, but he would be greater than him by being the criminal who defeated him in a battle of wits. And maybe, just maybe, Beyond would see the man, and see his name with his Eyes. And he would finally know L. Since the kills themselves were not his motive, he only killed those who were soon destined to die anyway and in this way managed to avoid the stab of crippling guilt. However, this did not prevent him from thoroughly enjoying the tortures he put his victims through. The Beyond Birthday serial murders of Los Angeles, California surged through the month of “Bloody” August. Beyond left clues, crossword puzzles and numbers, letters and word games in his path. L eventually found him and, already knowing who the killer was, sent an FBI agent to work as an extension of his senses to accumulate the evidence necessary for putting Beyond away. B found the agent, Naomi Misora, by waiting at a crime scene for her. Under the alias of “Ryuzaki”, he introduced himself as a private investigator and “helped” her on the case. Things were going his way until he tested Naomi, attacking her in an alley. He realized she knew Capoeira. When he mentioned this later her suspicions of him increased.
But to Beyond it hardly mattered. The idea of the murders was not for them to be unsolvable for L, but merely unclosable. At the end of the case he was going to douse himself in gasoline and set himself aflame so that his charred corpse could never be identified. The “killer” in the eyes of the public would never be found. L’s case would remain forever open. After all, Wammy Kids had no dental records. Only L would ever know the truth. Unfortunately things did not go as planned. Beyond upturned a canister of gasoline over himself but just before he struck the match the world warped around him.
…And he found himself in a strange new place…
